Photographers, are you leaving money on the table from your family portrait sessions? If you are giving the high resolution digital files from your family portrait sessions, you are. You are missing a huge opportunity to generate revenue and you are devaluing your artistic talent.
As a portrait photographer, here are a few things you should think about:
Giving the digital files to your family portrait clients, allows them to print the images anywhere they choose. When this happens, you lose complete control over the quality of the art you created. As a result, the image is no longer color corrected, the image can be cropped in ways that you did not envision it as your creation, and when these portraits are hung in homes and shared on-line, they, unfortunately, no longer represent your art, your creative vision. Consequently, your creative and artistic talent is discredited and devalued.
Value Your Creative Brilliance
Before the advent of the digital era, photographers created the prints for their portrait clients and the portraits were treasured as art for their home. The photographers seldom, if ever, gave the negatives to their portrait clients to take them and print them elsewhere. The photographers valued their art and vision and kept control of the printing process so as to ensure their art was fully represented the way they believed it should be.
Source of Revenue
Print orders are a significant source of revenue. Of course you do not have to charge an arm and a leg for prints. Keep the prices moderate so that your clients can afford the art for their home and have the timeless. Above all, printing your portraits for your clients through a professional lab will give them cherished memories to adorn their walls for generations to come.
Of course this post is written as my opinion, but it really is marketing 101 for portrait photographers. Don’t devalue your work or the work of photographers in general by giving your work away. Maintain control of your creative vision and artistry as a portrait photographer and stop leaving money on the table.
